Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” Isaiah 40:31

The inspiration for this painting was based on a sense of place, a refuge and picturesque mountain landscape with a soft glowing sunset and movement within the water. I incorporated the Isaiah verse by image transfer delicately within the waves. I painted the mountains with casein paint to softly sit within the layers of beeswax.

After reflecting on the idea of “mounting up” like an eagle, soaring high in the sky with confidence and no fear. The eagle is not afraid because he knows who he is. I desire that confidence and continually strive to face my fears. The eagle's safety lies within the sky and ours lies with our creator.

I completed this custom commission in June of 2022 prior to heading to the lake for the summer. Northern Michigan doesn’t have mountains but they do have bald eagles. The eagles nest was nearby along the shoreline and I was lucky to see one soar past daily. Their wings are large and powerful and they are fascinating to watch. Each time I saw one I thought back to this Isaiah verse and this painting.

Care Instructions

After completion of an encaustic painting there is a curing process of a few months. During this time moisture will work its way to the surface and cause a slight haze (this is called bloom). When the sheen dulls or looks dusty, it can be buffed (gently, firmly but not overly vigorous) to a high gloss using a soft lint-free cloth (similar to polishing or dusting furniture). The sheen dulls over time and can be brought back by repeating the process. Although the surface is completely dry, encaustic paintings can be easily scratched, gouged, or chipped if handled roughly. No fingernails please! Protect all encaustic from extreme heat (above 140 F) and freezing temperatures.

"To be honest, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted in my painting when we began. All I knew for sure was where it was going to be hung when it was done. As I began thinking about what I wanted, I started looking through Kari’s previous works to get a better idea of what her art looks and feels like. She had some pieces that really spoke to me. Through my thought processes and Kari’s gentle prodding, we were able to formulate a plan for my piece. And it ended up being a very simple process. When it was finished, I had an amazing piece of art that expressed so much of what was in my head, and in my heart, and in my soul. The colors and texture all combined to share the Bible verse that has become my lifeline and the thoughts and feelings that it evokes. This very special piece, “With Wings Like Eagles”, is my reminder of who I am, where I’ve been, and especially the journey I am on to ‘mount up with wings like eagles… and not become weary’! Thank you, Kari!"

What is Encaustic Art?

Encaustic is a painting method where pigmented beeswax is melted, applied to a surface and reheated to create a smooth or textured finish. The surface can be polished, modeled, textured and combined with other materials. It cools immediately, can be reworked and has a long durability due to beeswax's imperviousness to moisture.
