My summer spent at the lake revolves around tradition. Every summer we spend the July 4th holiday weekend together in Northern Michigan at Burt Lake. This tradition has been taking place every Independence Day for 35 years. After meeting my husband years ago, I am grateful to have been included in these lasting traditions for the last 16 years. This lake is the hear of where my inspiration flows from.

When our dear family friends asked me to create this custom painting inspired by their sunrise view over the lake, it was a gift to me as well. Their traditions are now our traditions. It is our home. We look out at the water with overflowing love and shared admiration. Anyone who has been to Burt Lake knows the majestic beauty of its waters is truly heaven on earth.

They requested the large tree in their yard to be incorporated as it is a predominant feature in their view and in their memory. I'll admit I was a little worried at first. I was concerned that it would interfere with the horizon line and focal point. Turns out it was exactly what the piece needed.

I thought of our time together over July 4th and their connection to the University of Michigan. One of our group traditions is to sing "The Star Spangled Banner" huddled around a delicious patriotic cake that has a new line from the song written on it each year.

The tree had a presence as if it was standing at attention saluting the waves and sunlight. When the titled dawned on me I knew it was perfect.

Care Instructions

After completion of an encaustic painting there is a curing process of a few months. During this time moisture will work its way to the surface and cause a slight haze (this is called bloom). When the sheen dulls or looks dusty, it can be buffed (gently, firmly but not overly vigorous) to a high gloss using a soft lint-free cloth (similar to polishing or dusting furniture). The sheen dulls over time and can be brought back by repeating the process. Although the surface is completely dry, encaustic paintings can be easily scratched, gouged, or chipped if handled roughly. No fingernails please! Protect all encaustic from extreme heat (above 140 F) and freezing temperatures.

What is Encaustic Art?

Encaustic is a painting method where pigmented beeswax is melted, applied to a surface and reheated to create a smooth or textured finish. The surface can be polished, modeled, textured and combined with other materials. It cools immediately, can be reworked and has a long durability due to beeswax's imperviousness to moisture.
