Philmont Scout Ranch is a 140,000 acre wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of New Mexico. Through backpacking expeditions in unique outdoor opportunities, youth and adults receive wilderness and learning adventures that last a lifetime.

My nephew completed this challenging trek not once but twice, along with his Dad and younger brother. Each time they brought back memorable stories of their long journey and photos that reminded them of their accomplishment.

I was inspired to create after hearing these meaningful stories and seeing their beautiful photographs. There was one image in particular that caught my eye. It was taken by my brother-in-law during a sunset hike at the end of day 7 of their itinerary. They were a little over half way done, but their two really difficult days were behind them.

From the moment they woke up until they reached the next camp, they were challenged. They realized they could handle it and they came out stronger, as one big family. Back home my sister would receive occasional updates if they reached an area with cell service. Each time she would share their milestones or what elevation they climbed, and it was clear how much she believed in their journey.

Philmont is affectionately called "God's country" and a spiritual element can be felt there. There is a hymn sung at the closing of all campfires, and the last few lines of the song are:

Purple mountains rise,
Against an azure sky.
Philmont, here's to thee,
Scouting Paradise,
Out in God's country Tonight.

I hope this painting is a reminder of all that he has accomplished, on this journey and in life. To my dear nephew, Happy 18th Birthday!

Care Instructions

After completion of an encaustic painting there is a curing process of a few months. During this time moisture will work its way to the surface and cause a slight haze (this is called bloom). When the sheen dulls or looks dusty, it can be buffed (gently, firmly but not overly vigorous) to a high gloss using a soft lint-free cloth (similar to polishing or dusting furniture). The sheen dulls over time and can be brought back by repeating the process. Although the surface is completely dry, encaustic paintings can be easily scratched, gouged, or chipped if handled roughly. No fingernails please! Protect all encaustic from extreme heat (above 140 F) and freezing temperatures.

What is Encaustic Art?

Encaustic is a painting method where pigmented beeswax is melted, applied to a surface and reheated to create a smooth or textured finish. The surface can be polished, modeled, textured and combined with other materials. It cools immediately, can be reworked and has a long durability due to beeswax's imperviousness to moisture.
