Crossing the Ocean, encaustic mixed media on panel, is an abstraction and reflection of the journey of my immigrant ancestors in the early 1900s. Though I do not know all of the details of my family’s history, I attempt to piece together their story and learn about the steps they took to become citizens of the United States. I used image transfers of historic documents from my Italian Great-Grandparents, including their immigration records, passports, inspection cards, military record and marriage certificate. I am inspired by their courage and strength, and the momentous decision they made to immigrate in hopes of a better life for their children, and their children’s children. Their decisions have helped shaped who I am today.
